Professor Chao Yali is a Professor in the Department of Mass Communication, Tamkang University. She has served as the Director of the Department of Mass Communication and Dean of the Faculty of Arts at Tamkang University and has been a visiting scholar at Hong Kong Baptist University. Since 2011, she has been seconded to industry by the Taiwan government. She has served as the Chairman of Taiwan Broadcasting System (which includes the Public Television Service, Chinese Television System, Hakka television, Taiwan Indigenous Television and Macroview Television Service). During this period, she also served as the General Manager of the Chinese Television System. She is one of the very few communication specialists in Taiwan who have rich experience of research and the integration of industry, government and academia.
Professor Chao is the founder and Chairman of Taiwan Audio Description Development Association. She was also one of the initiators of the "Chinese Communication Society", the most important association for Taiwan's communication academics. Currently, Professor Chao is an editorial board member or consulting editor for many academic journals, including Mass Communication Research, the Chinese Journal of Communication Research published in Taiwan and Hong Kong, and Communication and Society. Professor Zhao has won research funding from the Ministry of Science and Technology for 18 consecutive years. She has long promoted the theory of “Sense Science” and its application and has published dozens of papers in this area. In 2010, the theoretical framework of "Sense Science" was included in some special collections published by International Press.
Building on the academic success of “Sense Science", Professor Chao promoted the development of cultural and creative industries, audio description services, science popularisation programmes and picture books. She has also participated in the production of popular science units for Taiwan's top-rated TV puzzle programme, "The Million Dollar Primary School”.
Professor Chao holds a PhD in Communication from Ohio State University.
